R.I.S.E: React, Intervene, Support & Educate

“You can prevent violence before it starts“

The R.I.S.E. app (part of the Safer Campuses project) is an app created to give you ideas about how you can prevent and respond to sexual assault and intimate partner violence within campus and community settings.

Here’s how it works:

• Intervene: You’re out and about on campus. You identify and witness an incident of sexual violence but you’re unsure of what to do! Depending on where you are you can click on different campus settings that will upload a database of possible situations and tips for interventions & support!

• Support: In just one click you have access to an extensive resource database and GPS locations of support and safety services near you!

• Community: What are your priorities? The community button allows users to share their voice and inputs on issues and questions that matter to them!

• Educate: Upload one of our hip post-card themes, add your message to end violence and share it in your networks! Better yet, take your own photo, create your own message and share widely to educate the world around you on how to rise against violence on campuses.

• It also includes tools, educational information, and resources for supporting your friends and loved ones who are dealing with incidents of gender-based violence.

• R.I.S.E. is free and it’s bilingual (Francais et Anglais)

Of course, this app doesn’t have all of the answers and doesn’t include all of the complexities of sexual violence and gender-based violence on campuses. However, this app can help you understand how other people have responded to this issue on our campuses, where they have found support and how we can all move forward together.

R.I.S.E. is a project of OCTEVAW (Ottawa Coalition to End Violence Against Women) a community organization based in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). The R.I.S.E. app has been designed in partnership with the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre (ORCC). And thanks to Cinnamon Toast New Media for the awesome design work on this app!

This project is unique in that it has seen all four campuses in Ottawa join together to create partnerships and vision for the forward momentum of this project and ending violence against women on campuses. We would like to thank the University of Ottawa, Algonquin College, Carleton University, and La Cité Collégiale.

We would also like to thank and acknowledge all of our campus partners, community partners, research respondents, volunteers, steering committees, and members for their continued involvement and passion of this project and the issue of ending violence against women. Funding for the Preventing Violence Against Women on Campuses Project and the Rise Project has been provided by Status of Women Canada.
